Nutrition & Fitness Smartphone Apps

Updated: Mar 20, 2021

Use technology to your health advantage with some of my favorite apps right now!

Literally having the convenience of nutrition and fitness at your fingertips can really help you navigate through the world of health with little more ease. There is a growing number of smartphone apps that can provide you with easy access to making mindful food choices and exercise options in the convenience of your home. The apps I have recommended below are ones that I currently use regularly to help me achieve my hydration, meal planning, and exercise goals. If any of these apps catch your eye, download them for yourself to see if they can motivate you or inspire you to achieve your personal health goals too!

1. Shop Well

To make grocery shopping and food label reading a bit easier, downloading this app can be a great idea. Shop Well allows you to create a personalized Food Profile that includes your diet preferences, dietary goals, food allergies, and other health concerns. You can simply scan the barcode of any item at the grocery store and the app will match the product to your needs. This app can be customized to support various dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, low FODMAP, anemia, high cholesterol, diabetes and even several food allergens. You can also make a list of your favorite food finds and share with others.

2. Ice Boxx

This app is provides a virtual grocery inventory that can help you avoid food waste. You can simply input all the food items you have in your fridge, freezer, and pantry along with their expiration dates under each food category. There is also an option to set certain foods as priority which can be ones with a sooner expiration date. By using this app, you can use all your grocery items before they spoil and create new grocery lists accordingly. Another perk this app includes is a "recipes" button under a particular food item which leads you to a list of recipe ideas containing that food choice.

3. Waterlogged

For those of you that struggle with drinking enough water, this app might possibly motivate you to do so. You can simply set a daily water goal and select the kind of container you use to hydrate on the daily such as a water bottle, sports bottle, or if you use a glass cup. Every time you drink water, you can fill up a virtual water bottle with volume measurements(mL, L, oz.) of your daily water consumption. This app also allows you to monitor your overall daily, weekly, and even yearly hydration on a graph. A plus is that you can integrate this app with your FitBit, MyFitnessPal account, or Apple Health for easy tracking. With the Premium version, you can also set alerts at set times to make sure you don't forget to hydrate through the day!

4. Yummly

Are you tired of asking yourself " what's for dinner" everyday? Well thankfully, recipe apps like Yummly can make meal-time easier and hassle-free for you. You can search a variety of recipes based on your preferences and dietary needs. For example, the app offers kid friendly, seasonal, vegetarian, cultural cuisines, as well as quick and easy recipes. Additionally, this apps allows you to snap a photo of an ingredient such as a cucumber to discover recipes based on what you have at home. While doing my weekly meal planning on my digital meal planner, I love to browse on Yummly for some recipe ideas or inspiration to make my upcoming week well-nourished.

5. Yoga | Down Dog

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced yogi, this app provides instructional video yoga sessions that can be specialized to your needs. You can choose from several yoga styles such as gentle, quick flow, chair yoga, full practice, hatha, sun salutation, and more. Additionally, Down Dog offers several boost options for your yoga sessions that include aerobic, back strength, core, chest/shoulders, breathing, and several types of stretches. You can also select various paces, background music, and voice type for instructional videos that can range between 8 to 90 minutes. This app provides personable yoga experience in the convenience of your home.

6. 7-Minute Workout

Yes, this app offers exactly what the name suggests. If you don't have fitness as part of your daily regimen or dislike going to the gym regularly, this app may become your best friend. It provides you with visual instructional 7-minute workouts under various topics such as weight loss, arms, legs, core, beginner, complete, and more. You can also build your own circuit workout by selecting from the various exercise options. Tracking your progress is another plus on this app. You'll have no excuses when it comes time for some weekly physical activity after downloading this app!
